CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Rath pushed into the stairwell, assuming the assassin had a plan to tell him if the quarry moved to a different one. I’m surprised he didn’t find a way to rig the stairs with explosives. That would’ve been effective, and the security probably wouldn’t have been as tight. Although it would have endangered the innocent people in the building as they evacuated. Unless he put it on a delay to activate after.

Rath shook his head, abandoning the internal conversation and returning his attention to his surroundings. Thinking too much on a mission was a good way to get killed. Remembering the advice Cara had given him on any number of occasions made him laugh inside. He usually replied with an insult, accusing her of being unable to think in the first place.

On the whole, he would far rather be engaged in just about anything with his team instead of being where he was and doing what he was doing at the moment. Quit whining. There’s work to do.

He descended another flight and jerked back suddenly as bullets flew from the next landing. He’d failed to get a count of the opposition due to his quick reaction. “Gwen, show me how many there were.” A small box opened on his display with a static image of the area he’d seen. Two foes were present, one on the landing itself and a second a few steps farther down but still with a firing angle on the stairs.

He grabbed a shock grenade and threw it, running forward when it went off. It had caught the first enemy, and the man was currently falling onto the concrete platform underneath him. The second one had backed up to avoid it, but Rath’s rush was fast enough that the man’s first frantic shots flew wide.

The troll drew his batons without conscious thought and smacked the man in the knees with his right, poked him in the groin with his left, circled the right one out to smash into the man’s elbow, then spun and whipped the other one around in a backhand slam at the man’s head. His foe wasn’t armored—he wore the standard suit and tie of a plainclothes bodyguard—and he collapsed from the barrage. Rath stunned him with the tips of his batons, then quickly examined the fallen men. Finding nothing interesting, he continued his path down. “Do we know how many guards he has?”

Amadeo replied, “Negative. Status on the cameras?”

The infomancer responded, “Several other infomancers are blocking me. Not sure if they belong to the target or the building’s owners. I’m focusing on preventing any alarms from going out and maintaining control of the anti-magic emitters, as instructed. It may or may not be possible to regain the cameras since they seem pretty serious about keeping me away from them. I have access to the motion sensors, though, so I’ll know if they leave the stairwell. They don’t provide an accurate count, of course.”

Rath replied, “Okay. Good to know.” He slowed his
